Week 13: Fabric Chain Link Countdown
Once a year we fly back to America to visit our family, and every year I make a chain-link countdown so that me and the kids can get really excited as the days get closer to takeoff.
I'm pretty sure the first year I made one with 80 chains and then realized that I couldn't find anywhere to hang it because it was so long. In fact, due to the reality that I have an impossible time throwing away most anything that I make, it's actually become a permanent fixture as a decoration high up on the wall in my kids room in a swag like style.
This year, I decided to take some of my favorite fabrics and sew a chain-link countdown out of fabric so that I can use it over and over again! The closure mechanism that I will be using is colorful snaps, I'm very excited to install all of them
These fabric chains will also be a reminder of projects gone by.
The floral fabric pictured above is from a remnant of 2 meters of fabric sourced from an old woman on Facebook marketplace. She was downsizing her house and told me that she had bought 15 meters of this fabric for curtains and matching pillow cases, of which she had managed to finish…. none.
I whipped up this self drafted dress within days of acquiring fabric and was able to send her a photo. She thought it was grand!
When I first arrived she had shared with me that a stroke had left her pretty tired and lacking enough energy to live in such a large house anymore; a house that she had called home for thirty years. I was able to lay hands on her and pray for strength over her body.
